How to Measure Roof Pitch

Four methods for measuring your roof pitch — from easy and safe (attic) to advanced (from the ground). No roof access required for most methods.

What you need

A 24-inch level

Standard carpenter's level. 24 inches is ideal — long enough for accurate readings.

A tape measure

Any standard tape measure works.

A pencil or marker

Optional — for marking the 12-inch position on the level.

Method 1

From the Attic (Easiest & Safest)

Recommended for most homeowners. No roof access needed — you stay inside.

Access the attic. Find an exposed rafter (the sloped structural member) near a gable end of your home.

Hold the level horizontal. Place one end of the level against the bottom edge of the rafter. Make sure the bubble is centered — the level must be perfectly horizontal.

Mark 12 inches along the level. From the point where the level touches the rafter, measure 12 inches along the level and mark that spot with a pencil.

Measure the vertical distance. From your 12-inch mark, measure straight down to the rafter surface. This vertical measurement in inches is your rise.

Read your pitch. If you measured 6 inches down, your pitch is 6:12. If you measured 4 inches, your pitch is 4:12. That's it.

Method 2

From the Roof Surface

Use this if you have safe access to the roof surface. Better for larger, more gradual pitches.

Access the roof safely. Use a sturdy ladder and appropriate footwear with good grip. Have someone hold the ladder. Use a harness for any pitch above 7:12.

Place the level on the roof surface. Lay the level flat against the roof sheathing, parallel to the slope direction (not across it).

Raise the lower end until level. Lift the downhill end of the level until the bubble centers. Hold it there.

Measure the gap at 12 inches. From the uphill (resting) end, measure 12 inches along the level, then measure the gap between the level and the roof surface straight down. That gap is the rise.
Method 3

From the Ground (Phone Inclinometer)

No roof or attic access needed. Less precise but fine for a quick estimate.

Download an inclinometer app. On iPhone, use the Measure app (built-in). On Android, search "inclinometer" or "level" in the Play Store. Many free options exist.

Stand where you can see the rake. The rake is the sloped edge of a gable roof — visible from the side of your house. You need a clear line of sight to a straight section.

Align your phone with the rake edge. Look along the phone edge to align it with the roofline rake. The inclinometer reads your angle in degrees.

Convert degrees to x:12. Use our Pitch to Angle converter or the formula: x = tan(degrees) × 12.
Method 4

From Blueprints or Building Plans

The most accurate method if you have the original plans.

Find the elevation drawings. Look for the North, South, East, or West elevation sheets in your building plans. These show the external views of the building.

Look for the pitch triangle. Architects indicate roof pitch using a small right triangle symbol near the roof edge. It shows a horizontal number (typically 12) and a vertical number (the rise). For example, ▲ 6/12 means a 6:12 pitch.

Read the notation. The vertical number is the rise, the horizontal number is the run (always 12 in North American convention). A notation of "6" above "12" means 6:12.

Safety reminder

Never climb onto a roof in wet, icy, or windy conditions. Use a rope and harness for any pitch above 7:12 (30°). Roof work is one of the leading causes of construction fatalities — when in doubt, hire a professional or use the attic method.

What You Need Before You Start

Most roof pitch measurements require only two tools: a spirit level at least 12 inches long and a tape measure. The level establishes a true horizontal reference — your measurements are accurate only if the level is genuinely horizontal. A 24-inch level is more accurate than a 12-inch level because the longer baseline reduces reading error.

Optional tools include a digital angle finder (digital inclinometer), which reads the pitch angle directly when placed on a rafter or roof surface; a smartphone inclinometer app, which works the same way with reasonable accuracy; or a dedicated pitch gauge calibrated directly in x:12 notation. For measuring on the roof surface: rubber-soled shoes, a safety harness, and a helper to hold the safety rope are essential above any pitch steeper than 4:12.

Method 1 — Measuring from the Attic (Safest)

Measuring from inside the attic is the preferred method. It requires no roof access, is highly accurate, and can be done in any weather. Enter the attic through a hatch or pull-down stair and locate a rafter — the angled framing member that follows the roof slope. Hold your level horizontally against the underside or side of the rafter, near the low end. Center the bubble.

Once the bubble is centered, mark the rafter at the 12-inch point measured along the level from its low end — measured along the level, not along the rafter. Then measure straight down, perpendicular to the level, from that 12-inch mark to the rafter surface. That vertical measurement in inches is the rise. A measurement of 6 inches gives you a 6:12 pitch. Four inches gives 4:12. Eight inches gives 8:12. Enter rise and 12 for run into the calculator to see the full picture.

Method 2 — Measuring from the Roof Surface

When attic access is unavailable, measure directly on the slope. Use appropriate safety equipment: rubber-soled shoes, harness, and a helper. Place your level flat on the roof surface, oriented with the slope (so it runs from eave toward ridge). Lift the low end until the bubble centers.

At the 12-inch point from the low end, measured along the level, measure the gap from the bottom of the level down to the roof surface. That gap in inches is the rise. For tight spaces or small areas, a 12-inch level works well — center the bubble and measure the rise at the 12-inch mark on the level.

Method 3 — Smartphone Inclinometer App

Modern smartphones contain accelerometers that measure tilt angle. On iOS, the built-in Measure app has a level function. On Android, similar tools exist in the Compass app or as standalone downloads. Place the phone against a rafter in the attic, aligned with the slope, and read the angle in degrees. Smartphone accuracy is typically within 1–2 degrees, which is adequate for estimating and planning but not for precision structural calculations. Always verify with the level-and-tape method before ordering materials or cutting rafters.

Method 4 — Reading Pitch from Blueprints

Architectural drawings almost always indicate pitch directly. On elevation drawings (front or side views of the building), look for a small right-triangle symbol with two numbers: the vertical number (rise) above a horizontal line over the number 12. A symbol showing 6 over 12 means a 6:12 pitch. This symbol appears near the roof slope on the rake edge of the building elevation.

On older or international plans, pitch may be stated as a percentage slope, a decimal ratio, or in degrees. A "1:2 slope" in European notation means rise:run = 1:2, which equals 6:12 in x:12 notation. A slope of 50% also equals 6:12. When working from international plans, verify the notation system before calculating.

Common Measurement Mistakes

Incorrect pitch measurements produce incorrect rafter lengths, material estimates, and structural calculations. Here are the most frequent errors and how to prevent them.

  • Measuring along the rafter instead of a horizontal level — always hold the level horizontal; measuring along the sloped rafter gives a false result because the rafter is longer than the true horizontal run
  • Confusing full span with run — the run is half the building span; if you try to measure total rise from eave to ridge, that rise corresponds to half the span, which is the correct run
  • Assuming uniform pitch — complex roofs often have different pitches on different sections; measure each section independently
  • Misreading plan symbols — some older drawings show degrees, not x:12; verify the notation system before using the number in rafter calculations
  • Measuring on a wet or frosted surface — defer roof-surface measurements to dry, calm conditions; use the attic method in poor weather

Safety When Measuring on the Roof

Attic measurement is safe for anyone who can navigate an attic space. Roof-surface measurement introduces real fall risk. A 6:12 pitch feels walkable in dry conditions but becomes treacherous when wet, frosted, or algae-covered.

Always work with a partner — one person to measure, one to manage the safety rope. Anchor the rope to a ridge anchor or chimney before stepping on the roof. Wear rubber-soled roofing shoes. Avoid roof work in rain, high wind, or below-freezing temperatures. For pitches steeper than 7:12, or any wet surface, hire a roofing professional to take the measurement rather than risk a fall.
